As opera composer, philosopher, dramatist, political theorist, and colorful romantic figure, he left a powerful imprint on the Europe in which he lived. The Siegfried Idyll is built around a group of themes, incorporated from various sources, including: the third act of the opera Siegfried, where Brünnhilde pledges her love for the hero; the Forest Bird song from Siegfried; and a German lullaby "Schlaf, Kindlein, schlaf."* According to Wagner, the main theme, which does indeed show up in Brünhilde's declaration of love, had originally been part of an unfinished string quartet, begun six years earlier, which he had promised to Cosima when Wagner’s passionate Siegfried Idyll was a birthday present for his wife—a birthday that just happened to fall on Christmas Day.
